I like spicy food, add some garlic, give me a little kick. Not so spicy where a death waiver needed to be signed, like the time I was working on Man V Food as a PA and was watching Adam Richman eat ghost pepper wings. His tear actually burned. That’s not the spicy Im talking about. Im talking about a spicy that sits in the front of the tongue, gives a nice burn going down, and breaks a little sweat. Thats my kind of spicy. …
I got a chance to try out Girasol, and American cuisine restaurant which prepares its menu seasonally with the help of a forager to gather local/and rustic ingredients. Pine needles and grass anyone? Oh yes, and lovage, lots and lots of lovage. I still don’t know what that is.
When I first arrived at this restaurant, the first thing I noticed was how LOUD it was. I guess that has been a recent trend, places like Black Market Liquor Bar and Laurel Tavern have the same general aesthetics. This is one of those places to be if you want to be seen with your date… Whether or not you want to hear them, is a totally different matter. I had to pause and have my date repeat what she was saying a couple of times. Girasol had a pleasing atmosphere and decor and is very well put together. I am a Jersey boy, born and raised, came from a small town with one stop light, about 3000 people, where our entire commercial tax base was one restaurant, a laundromat, travel agency, bank, and a barber. The closet market was nothing like the supermarkets we have today. When did supermarkets and restaurants have kids? Because this is an awesome idea. Enter Whole Foods in Pasadena….
What happens when two foodies get together for dinner? Great food is the answer. And that was the case Saturday night when I had the pleasure of dining with the owner of The Triple Dipper , a site dedicated to dips. From her suggestion, the choices in front of me included The Village, Black Market Liquor Bar, which you can read my review here, (weekendfoodie.com/black-market-liquor-bar-studio-city-ca/), and the Laurel Tavern, which I had been to, but pretty loud to carry on a conversation….
I recently went to Wood & Vine with a friend of mine and absolutely enjoyed it. Unfortunately, in certain situations, I don’t like to bring my Cannon camera because I think it will disturb the other diners. In this case, I used my phone and the pictures didn’t come out very well, so in lieu of a typical review, I am going to have to take a mulligan on this one. I will have to go back in the next couple weeks and try again.
Oh the hazards of my job….
I will post a proper review as soon as I get back!
