Now that the rainy season is over in Los Angeles, it is now the unofficial start of Spring. And with the start of Sping comes planning beach trips, road trips, and backyard BBQs. Last year, I was fortunate enough to be working, but unfortunately, one of my jobs entailed a 60 mile to and from Malibu from Hollywood, so my beach trips became very few and far between. So I have been looking forward to this season!
Over the weekend, my friend and I took a last minute road trip down to Santa Monica for a quick bite and ended up at a restaurant right across from the pier called Del Frisco’s Grille. If you like people watching, this is the place for you. Just make a priority to sit on the outside patio and watch all of the tourists andlocals line up for a opportunity to talk over to the pier and beach. But be aware of the “public parking” at the hotels, they charge up to $20 for the day.
I can think of fewer things that I would rather be doing than sipping a pint of Firestone 805 across the street from Santa Monica beach. Until the appetizers came out. One thing I have learned from my southern CA occupancy is that if it says Pimento Cheese, its worth ordering. And I was not disappointed
ordering the Pimento Cheese Fritters. These were perfect bite sized cheese balls with a pimento cheese dipping sauce on the side. My friend did not approve, saying it was just too much cheese, but I have to object with 2 words, “Pimento cheese” argument won.
Being from the Philadelphia area, there are a couple things I can’t live without, Wawa sandwiches (which now has expanded into Florida), and cheesesteaks. And I was really impressed by the Cheesesteak Eggrolls. I would have never thought of this idea, but to the person who came up with this, God bless you sir/ma’am. What a great way to serve a cheesesteak. This appetizer was the definitely the highlight of the meal.
After appetizers, and a little more sipping and people watching, our actual lunches showed up. I got the cheeseburger and my friend ended up with the fish tacos. I liked the presentation of both,a nd when I saw the big burger, I started to get excited. If you are like me, and like your meat medium rare, this is not the burger for you. The patties were pretty thin, but the burger was packed with other goodies and a whole lotta cheese. But when I bit in, I immediately thought In N Out burger. Don’t get me wrong, it was a really good burger, but I shouldn’t be equating a fine dining burger sitting on the beach with In N Out, I guess I was expecting more. Either way, both of our plates were vacated of food pretty quickly which left us with one decision. Dessert.
With the pier looming across the street, our choice was obvious. With her having to go to work later that evening, and the thought of a quick score, we wandered across the street to the pier where we achieved our goal of buying some cotton candy and some freshly popped caramel pop corn, still warm in the plastic bag. Needless to say, the first 5 minutes of the car ride home were pretty fun, until the sugar high wore off.
Del Frisco’s was a great way to start the 2014 beach season, it primed my pump for more great beach food and made me look forward to my next beach trip where I may actually go on the beach. If you get there and don’t order the Cheesesteak Eggrolls or Pimento Cheese Fritters, you are missing out. Next time I go, I am looking forward to trying more on the menu while sipping on my 805.
